There are many types of doctors who treat asthma. Here are a few examples:
  • Allergy & Asthma Doctor, also known as an allergist. This might be the right kind of healthcare professional for you if you have the allergic kind of asthma.

  • Pulmonary Specialist, also known as a pulmonologist. This kind of doctor specializes in treating people with lung diseases, including asthma.

  • Family Medical Doctors (or FMD for short), also known as GPs, which is short for General Practitioners. Because asthma is such a common disease, even family doctors can be quite knowledgeable about how to treat it.

  • Pediatricians, who are doctors who specialize in the care of infants and children. Asthma is one of the most common childhood illnesses, so most pediatricians are also knowledgeable in asthma care.

  • Pediatric Asthma Specialists; some doctors even specialize just in treating children with asthma. If your child has severe or poorly controlled asthma, you might want to consult with this kind of specialist.

When you need to find a new doctor, it's hard to know who – or how – to choose. Of course, your family physician can always make recommendations. You may also want to use online methods to research possibilities. About.com offers such a service here with their UCompare service.
